Lavender Vase Tangerine Rose

Lavender Vase Tangerine Rose
10"X10"
Oil on Wood Panel
$300 - unframed

Packing up paintings to send to Maine wrecked havoc with painting this week.
They're finally off. So now I can paint. My Just Joey roses are in full swing. I can't resist putting them in my lavender vase. Chihuly colors. We saw his show at the De Young Museum last night. Not my medium. Not my forms. Not my colors. But oh so exuberant. A celebration. Loved every minute of it anyway. Just plain fun.

Rose Bouquet 2

Rose Bouquet 2
8"X8"
Oil on Wood Panel
$400
A gallery owner once expressed interest in some images I sent of Maine boat paintings. She asked me to send some more. I happened to have just finished a series of flower paintings. Being the newest thing I was doing, I was quite enthusiastic about them. She fired back, "Flowers! Not in MY gallery." And that was the end of that potential business relationship.
That was some years ago. I think I just got over it.

Rose Bouquet

Rose Bouquet
8"X8"
Oil on Wood Panel
$400
Yesterday afternoon I stopped in to see Robert M. Kulicke's paintings at the Paul Thiebaud Gallery.
Exquisite little jewels. Small paintings of simple flower bouquets, pears, half peeled oranges, and other fruit, alone and in combination. Dark backgrounds are the key to the intimate power of these little paintings.
I came right home, picked a few roses, and put them in my favorite crystal vase that was a housewarming present 24 years ago. I set the bouquet on a counter in my studio and hung a black velvet cloth behind it.
Magic.
I didn't mention that Kulicke also built elaborate frames for his little paintings. I'm not doing that. At least not yet. I'm going outside to pick some more roses so I can make another painting before the day is over.

Two couples, one dog, three wooden rowboats and a spontaneous response to a calm summer morning: rowing to a neighboring island to sit on Sand Beach, take in the view, have a walk and a chat before rowing back again.

Summer Pears 2
6"X6"
Oil on Wood Panel
SOLD
Why pears? Why now? Because someone asked specifically for them. More than once. And nicely. I wasn't enthusiastic initially. But I said I would. So I did. And as usual, made some discoveries along the way. Because they stand still I worked from real life and although the shadows moved, I liked seeing the actual form rather than a 2 dimensional version of it. One of them is beginning to rot, so I think I will eat it now.

Summer Day

Summer Day
8"X8"
Oil on Wood Panel
SOLD
Today was the day to clean up the studio. That took all morning and it doesn't look any different. But the garage is full of garbage which must have come from somewhere. Am glad I finally did get to painting this afternoon. Calmed me right down just thinking about boats bobbing in the water and little waves rippling by.

Sailing Solo

Sailing Solo
10"X10"
Oil on Wood Panel
SOLD
After handing out some advice on painting, I decided to take some of my own medicine and try something new. These are the same colors I always use. Just fewer. And more muted. The image is from several years ago. Hannah Gray's return from her first single handed sailing voyage. She emerged out of a thick fog. Quietly triumphant. I've often wanted to find a way to depict the moment in a painting. Finally did it today. Because I took a chance and tried a new way.

Yesterday I went to Fouth and Clay to deliver some little paintings and met Harry Potter, Josie's Golden puppy. What a joyous way to start the week.

Side By Side

Side By Side
6"X6"
Oil on Wood Panel

I spent the weekend painting. The house. Exterior. It's been 2 years. Or is it 3. When you lose track, it's time. Like a boat, the wood needs preserving. I could use a little preserving myself. Glad to be back in the studio. With my paints. It's a bright, sunny day, calling out for warm tones. We'll see what develops.
