This is an old painting remade in today's image.  Soft and grey and luminous. It's so much easier to see what needs doing as time goes by. I wonder how many other paintings sitting around my studio would benefit from similar reworking.
What have I got to lose?
If only we could maintain our confidence no matter what. If only.

The Day Begins

Weekend Morning
Oil on Wood

My man and my dog, two of my very best friends. Seeing them there, first thing in the morning. Makes my heart swell.

Through the garden, past the blooming magnolia, over Mary's house, a glimpse of the Bay. On this the birthday of my oldest friend, Mag. And of George Washington, of course.  A riot of warmth, sunshine and color and deep down well being.

Books Waiting

 Books Waiting
Oil on Wood
12"X12"
SOLD
Here is one stack of books waiting to be given away, the result of yesterday's fevered attempt to rid my life of clutter. It will be easier to let them go now that they have become objects of art in this painting. Much easier. But then. There will be one more painting to find a place for.

The day started at dawn with an overwhelming determination to clear out the clutter. While I was in the throws of throwing away, I heard Terri Gorss interviewing Stephen Sonheim who said, "Art is an attempt to create order out of chaos." That struck a chord. So I got back to painting. Now there are piles of books and papers and photographs everywhere begging to become garbage or subjects of a painting. So much chaos. So little time for Art.

In the morning, before the sky turned blue, the Bay was grey and silver. Shimmering. It just so  happens, a free tube of "Torrit Grey" was included in my recent order of Gamblin paint. "In honor of Earth Day, we make this oil color from recycled pigments collected by our air filtration system," says Gamblin. A gift. From a great paint company. So I put it right to use recreating the light encountered on this morning's walk around the block.

Valentine's Day on San Francisco bay. Nowhere I would rather be this morning. Beautiful city. Clearing skies. And a big huge freighter headed out the Gate.

Maira Kalman was at City Arts and Lectures last Friday promoting her new book,  "Why We Broke Up," with her hilarious co-author, Daniel Handler. Among the tidbits I took to heart about her creative process:
"... collecting meaningless moments through the day and that becomes your life."
"Daydreaming is the basis of everything."
And then the clincher:
"... just trying to be occupied. Until. You know. The inevitable."
Isn't that the truth? The first light. The morning walk. The chance encounter. The dog on the couch. It's what I do. And what I paint. Occupying myself.

My neighbor, Ann Grace, who at nearly 96 died last week, had these words tacked to her kitchen wall.  I copied them on a scrap of paper and tacked them to my studio wall where they have stayed for 28 years. Faded and barely legible, here are her words to live by:
To succeed is to achieve one's goal;
To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child,
a garden patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived.
This is to have succeeded.

Attributed, perhaps incorrectly, to Ralph Waldo Emerson, it may have been written by Bessie Stanley.
Whoever wrote the words, for me they will always be Ann's. And "to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived -- this is to have succeeded" will be my guide.

Grey Sky in the Studio

Grey Sky in the Studio
Oil on Wood
6"X8"
 I have been working on large paintings. But this afternoon, with mist settling on the bay outside my studio I just had to take a break from that task to celebrate the mood. Dark and grey and soft and wet is simply too beautiful to ignore.

The Point

The Point
Oil on Wood
15"X7"
The point? There isn't an actual point. And around each point is another. And that's the point. That there isn't any. Except being, seeing, and making the most of it.
Last night I watched a documentary about the portrait artist, Alice Neel
What a life. More loss than any one should have to bear. And yet. She survived and created art all her own. And eventually gained recognition. Same old lesson. Believe, have courage, and persevere.
