Friendship in the Fog

Friendship in the Fog
Oil on Wood
12"X12"
SOLD

Yesterday afternoon the fog suddenly moved in without warning. Everything changed around us; the temperature, the color, the landscape, the sound, the activity, and everyone's mood.  It's as if we were transported to a different place without having to move an inch.

Gabriel Sails By

Gabriel Sails By
Oil on Wood
6"X6"
SOLD
It was too nice a day this morning to do anything other than sit on the deck and watch the world go by. So we did, and were there when Gabriel sailed by in our old Rhodes 19, finding just enough breeze here and there to sail back and forth in and out of view for a good long time. A lovely sight, unfolding in slow motion, on a sunny Saturday in July.

Daydreaming in January

Daydreaming in January
Oil on Canvas

I don't know about you, but I have been procrastinating more than usual lately. I have not made a dent in the list of things that need doing, and I continue to find plenty to do that isn't on the list of "shoulds." There is something about long nights and short days that makes me want to curl up with a book and call it all off. But then, I can make a case for that scenario in the summer too. And then there's spring fever, which is just around the corner threatening to take me away from the business at hand.  Maybe imagining summer is a cure for what ails me. Or maybe this is the stuff that gives life to Life. Daydreaming.

August Still

August Still
Oil on Wood

SOLD
Wednesday afternoon time stood still. There being not a breath of wind, big boats from the New York Yacht club floated by the ledge in slow motion reflecting our mood. Going nowhere, getting nowhere in particular. Just being here.

August Comes Ashore

August Comes Ashore
Oil on Wood

It's now or never for Summer. July was too hot, then it was too cold. It rained, and the fog lingered for days. Life unfolded in slow motion. August has brought dry air and with it frantic activity. There is a constant parade of boats in the harbor, lots of people coming and going. Fast forward, Fall is on the horizon. Soaking it all in before time is up.

August Air

August Air
Oil on Wood
12"X12"
A big breeze blew the sailors on their way this morning. I retrieved the car from the boatyard and went to the postoffice to mail a painting to Ohio. Then the car wouldn't start, so Rosie and I had a nice walk home, arriving just in time to watch the ICs race right off our beach. It is evening now. The house is quiet and sweet solitude fills every room. The wind has died down, leaving August in the air.
Dry. Crisp. Clean. And full of possibility.

The Sailors Set Sail

The Sailors Set Sail
Oil on Canvas
12"X9"
The sailors set sail late Sunday morning. I read the Times and lazed around in the heat until afternoon when I dragged myself to the studio to continue the tradition of documenting the start of their voyage to nowhere. Then it was time to go hear  Jennifer Rosengarten and Kathi Smith, artists in residence at the Heliker LaHotan Foundation talk about their work. It was so hot, and I was so disenchanted, I almost didn't go. But I hopped on my bike and got there in time to see their wonderful, exuberant paintings and soak in their enthusiasm  for being on the island. It was just what I needed to set me straight and back on the road to creative endeavor.

Slow Motion

Slow Motion
Oil on Wood
10"X22"
There was almost no wind yesterday when the ICs raced around in the Western Way. The air was soft,  the sea glassy, and everything moved in slow motion.  A few ripples ruffed up the water where the spectator fleet was milling around. It felt like a dream. The good kind from which one wakes feeling calm, content, and quietly hopeful.

The Sailors Head East

The Sailors Head East
Oil on Wood
8"X6"
The sailors headed down east this morning, setting the spinnaker, looking magnificent as they left our harbor. It was a day made for sailing. Wind and sun and sea a deep deep blue. Rosie and I sat on the beach watching them go. I did some errands, visited a few people, and as usual when everything is suddenly quiet, took awhile to settle into my coveted time alone routine.

Boats on San Francisco Bay 2

Boats on San Francisco Bay 2
Oil on Wood
4"X4"
It took all morning to upload files for a new business card. Nothing like conquering a tech feat to make one feel all kinds of powerful.
I'm liking these old timey colors I happened upon painting the Boats on the Bay series. A new wave for me so to speak?  We'll see where it takes me. For now, it's the weekend. Warm and well earned after the morning's challenge.

Boats on San Francisco Bay

Boats on San Francisco Bay
Oil on Wood
4"X4"
I seem to have started a series of little paintings from the week of Big Boats racing on San Francisco Bay. Little because it's that time of year. (Monterey Museum of Art Miniatures, November 17, Bolinas Museum Mini Show November 19, Studio Gallery SF Tiny Show November 3.) Boats on the Bay because it's the backdrop of my life. The Bay, Alcatraz, the City, the Bridge, monuments all. Boats and big ships enlivening the seascape in the same way cows make Sonoma hillsides come alive.
We'll see what happens.

Fog 2

The light couldn't be more beautiful. Warm grays, everything soft and dreamy. Suits my quiet mood but I am sorry for the sailors who are out somewhere wishing for a raucous wind.
