Seeing "American Sublime" with Lee

 Seeing "American Sublime" with Lee
Oil on Wood
8"X10"

Amy Sherald's, "American Sublime" at S.F. MOMA is stunning.
Sharing it with my good friend made it even sweeter.

It makes you think anything is possible. Inspiration, intention, perseverance, goodness and beauty. For one afternoon Art replaced the rage, greed, and ugliness that fills the air. Hanging on to that.

Absorbing "La Vie en Rose"

 Absorbing "La Vie en Rose"
Oil on Wood
10"X10"

Back to SF MOMA where I soaked in the magnificence of Joan Mitchell's unbridled energy.  To be in a room, with a few good friends, surrounded by art is enough to make the future seem plausible.

Considering LOVE

Considering LOVE
Oil on Wood

Available for sale online from SusanLandor.com

I am glad Indiana's LOVE is back on the wall SF MOMA.
We need all the LOVE we can get.
It's January. Cold. Wet. Grey.
I am listening to Bach's Well Tempered Clavier nonstop in the studio, trying to stay in touch with my soul. That and long lunches with dear friends. Keeping the darkness at bay.

LOVE - Never Gets Old

LOVE - Never Gets Old
Oil on Wood
6"X6"

Available online from SusanLandor.com

I want to thank Chad Olcott and Alison Landon for urging me to do an Artist's Talk yesterday at Mulberry's Home, Chad's beautiful home furnishings store in Oakland, which is all decked out for Christmas.  It felt good to be surrounded by beautiful objects and an appreciative audience who came to hear about my approach to making art, which is essentially, "just do it."

Monet Moment 3

Monet Moment 3
Oil on Wood
10"X10"

Monet and Mozart on a Sunday afternoon - a perfect combination. Memories of "Monet: The Late Years" at the de Young Museum and Mozart's music fill my studio, obliterating the woes of the world and my own petty grievances. The outside world melts away, leaving in its place a inner world of peace, beauty, and gratitude.

Monet Moment 2

Monet Moment 2
Oil on Wood
10"X10"

SOLD

Back in time is a good place to be on a day like today. Or any day, come to think of it. I am still feeling buoyant after milling around rooms full of Monet's "Water Lilies" at the de Young Museum with people young and old soaking it all in.  Seeing friends and neighbors, weekend with family, and a long talk with my sister  this afternoon has filled me up with gratitude and made the dark days and endless rain less oppressive.

Green Dream

Green Dream
Oil on Wood
10"X10"

Joan Brown's "Green Bowl" welcomes you to "Wayne Thiebaud's Artist's Choice" show at SF MOMA "Thiebaud’s own work is featured alongside paintings by others that he personally selected from SFMOMA’s collection." (Read about it HERE.) And the best part is Thiebaud's unpretentious words explaining his reason for choosing each of the paintings. He is the master of demystifying art. No mumbo jumbo. Just heartfelt admiration and sheer delight in it all.  And for me, moments like these where green meets green lift me right out of the doldrums. Art inspires art.

Mesmerized by Magritte

"Mesmerized by Magritte's 'Le Retour'"
Oil on Wood
6"X6"

I returned to SF MOMA for more Magritte this week, this time the guest of a friend who had arranged a tour with a gifted guide. Usually I just want to look and see and absorb, but it was illuminating to hear about his response to those times of terrible turmoil.  Here we are again in a troubled world all trying to make sense of it, and trying to find ways to make our voices heard. Art imitates life imitates art. And art inspires art.

Man Meets Magritte's 'Son of Man' at SF MOMA

Man Meets Magritte's 'Son of Man'
Oil on Wood
10"X10"

Last week  when the news from Washington was more than I could bear, I took myself to SF MOMA to see the Magritte show.  As usual, the paintings were greatly enhanced by the parade of people gliding by, stopping along the way to soak in Magritte's magic. Being there in the presence of the past, and seeing all the people appreciating art lifted the gloom for a time.

Ann and Avery at the Farnsworth

Ann and Avery at the Farnsworth
Oil on Wood
10"X10"

Everything is enhanced by Ann's presence. Milton Avery's "The Typist" at the Farnsworth was no exception on our outing with friends last week to Rockland to fill up on friendship and art.

I love this quote from Rothko:
"What was Avery's repertoire? His living room, Central Park, his wife Sally, his daughter March, the beaches and mountains where they summered; cows, fish heads, the flight of birds; his friends and whatever world strayed through his studio: a domestic, unheroic cast."

My kind of guy.
