The herring are running in San Francisco Bay. The fishing boats are trolling night and day, pelicans are bobbing along the shore, and the seals are eating themselves into a frenzy. It has nothing to do with this painting, but it's what's happening outside my window this afternoon. Wildlife going berserk while indoors I am here painting in my peaceful little world where Bach fills the air and time stands still.

Giraffe. Elegant, enchanting, and awesome. Like our President's inauguration today. Blanco's poetry and music that moved us to tears. Unlikely, and yet so real. Fills one right up with quiet inspiration.

Martin Luther King's speech delivered on the steps of the Lincoln memorial in 1963 is as powerful and poignent today as it was then.
Listen.
The majesty of his words is not unlike the majesty of animals in the wild. Humbling. Inspiring. And ever so hopeful.

To think they are all out there going about their lives in the wild while we go about ours in the so-called tame. It's downright reassuring.

What could be more beautiful on a cold morning in the studio than Bach's Cantata BWV 4 ?
Or remembering  moments of my visit to a friend yesterday. A new wonderful thing is waiting to be discovered everyday, she said. Something simple. Experienced for the first time, or the same old thing seen in a new light.  Sundown. When the day gets gathered up and made into memory to be played over and over for all the years to come. I am going to hold on to that.

While we wandered around admiring Africa's Nature, our nephew was thinking about lessons he could learn to better navigate the real world.
I'm not sure I was thinking at all, immersed as I was in the enormity of experience.  Processing it now with paint  to hold on to the mystery and magic just a little bit longer.

So where was I? After 2 weeks watching animals and hanging our with family in South Africa, I have lost track of what I am doing in the studio. Maybe tomorrow.
